The buzz along the E18

Three million honeybees are buzzing along the E18 between Kristiansand and Grimstad.

The bees have been placed at the initiative of Agder OPS Vegselskap, which built and operates the highway on this stretch. The aim is to promote a rich plant life and contribute to increased biodiversity.

The honeybees, which are cared for by local beekeepers, are distributed in 50 hives located at a good distance from the resting places.

In their search for nectar, honeybees can stop at 1,000 flowers during a flight. Pollen sticks to the bees' furry coat and is transported between the flowers. This is how the bees ensure that the flowers are fertilized.

The honeybees along the E18 produce around a ton of honey every year. The beekeepers keep the honey and sell it locally.

FACTS:
Honeybees live in communities consisting of 1 queen, around 500 drones and up to 60,000 workers.
The bees have six legs, five eyes, four wings and two antennae.
